Passenger Boarding Bridge Structural Systems, Drives, and Lift Mechanisms
This course establishes the core mechanical competencies required to service passenger boarding bridge installations on the commercial airport apron. Students explore the structural architecture of telescoping bridge tunnels, the fixed rotunda pivot column, and articulating aircraft cab assemblies. Instruction emphasizes load paths, structural integrity inspections, mechanical wear limits, and operational stress calculations where load $L$ and moment $M$ govern mechanical reliability. Technical analysis covers dual-wheel electro-mechanical drive bogeys, solid tire assemblies, differential gear reducers, variable frequency travel drives, and steer pivot assemblies. Students also master the mechanical components of vertical elevation systems, including electromechanical ball-screw columns, synchronized chain or cable hoists, and hydraulic lift cylinders. Applied diagnostic sessions focus on diagnosing drive track misalignments, drive gear wear, elevation hoist leveling discrepancies, and cab rotation mechanisms. Safety protocols regarding mechanical lockout/tagout, fall protection, and apron movement areas are strictly integrated throughout all coursework.
